WIAL History

In 1995, WIAL co-founder Michael Marquardt met and worked with Reg Revans, widely recognised as the father of Action Learning. Their conversations led to the development of the WIAL model of Action Learning, which focuses on continual learning. After years of testing through experience and research, the model took final form in its renowned six components and two ground rules of Action Learning.

Over the past 12 years, WIAL's Action Learning approach has elevated the performance of hundreds of organisations worldwide including Caterpillar, Booz Allen Hamilton, Boeing, Samsung, LG Electronics, Alcoa, US Departments of State, Energy and Agriculture, Hong Kong Transit, National Institutes of Health, Singapore Airlines, IBM, Nokia, Constellation Energy, Siemens, Posco Steel, International Labor Organization, and SulAmerica Insurance. Many universities around the world have incorporated the WIAL model into their curricula and learning methodology.

WIAL has sponsored Action Learning Forums in the United States and Asia. WIAL members have written numerous books and articles on the subject of Action Learning, including two that are classics in the field - Action Learning in Action and Optimizing the Power of Action Learning.

WIAL currently enjoys or expects soon to have affiliates in Australia, Japan, Korea, China, Brazil, South Africa, Mauritius, Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, Papua New Guinea, and Germany.

WIAL Australia was formed in 2008 after Dr Marquardt's visit to Australia in conjunction with the AITD (Australian Institutue of Training and Development) to run introductory awareness programs in the action learning process. His previous association with Reg Revans and the IMCA led him into discusions with Dr Luxmoore, a long term IMCA partner and action learning practitioner- and so WIAL Australia was born. WIAL Australia's other founding Director, Mr John Sautelle was also one of the country's first Certified Senior Action Learning coaches.

WIAL Australia is now active in certifying action learning coaches, conducting in-house and public action learning programs and promoting action learning throughout the country.
